PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA'S No.1 for ARTS, CULTURE & LIFESTYLE

Promenade Cycling

Remember a little while back how the Council offered up options on cycling on the promenade? Remember how overwhelming the win was for allowing cycling on the promenade? Seems like the council are ignoring everyone’s wishes (read the story on The News website). If you feel strongly about the situation and wish to get involved then Portsmouth Cycle Forum are holding an open meeting on 7pm at Meeting Room 1 at Portsmouth Guildhall and the issue will be on the agenda which will be:

* Children and Cycling
* Seafront Cycle Route
* Road Safety consultation
* Cycling infrastructure update
* Open Forum

For more information on the meeting check the new PCF Newsletter (PDF file), fingers crossed some compromise or change of heart by the council is possible.

    Today?

    I honestly think this is a fairly rediculous turn of events, what exaclty was the point of spending what I would imagine is thousands on the consultation to simply turn round and ignore it.

    It angers up the blood.

    How many accidents have there actually been when a cyclist has hit a pedestrian on the promenade?

    Compare that to how many accidents there has been between cars and cyclists (especially when cars reverse out of the parking bays) when we’re forced to cycle on the road along there.

    The whole Southsea Common and BBQs thing and now this, you can’t but help think that certain councillors are out to get their own way, no matter the cost, logic, evidence or what the general public consensus is.

    People reversing out of the parking bays is a constant issue. Only last night some idiot in a BMW nearly knocked me off.

    Yep, add me to the list of near misses both down by the Pyramids and in Eastney. But to be fair, it doesn’t help having the angled parking bays as when a van parks to your left you can’t sea anything coming towards you on your side of the road.

    Vernon-Jackson on yer bike. Portsmouth Council are so useless at this type of thing. Why spend all that money on the consultation to get to this point. There must be some way, where the public can turn this around .
