Portsmouth Vernacular – Jodie Silsby

Communication Design graduate Jodie Silsby tells it how it is with these new litho printed vernacular maps of our our fair city. All the streets throughout the whole of Portsea Island have been replaced with local sayings like ‘Cushty’ and ‘Goin Dain The Pub’. This run is the third edition available proving it’s popularity and is now printed on both sides with a little introduction to ‘Pompey’ on the reverse and is available in Navy on a Cool Grey background.

Being a Graduate from the same course myself it’s always good to see great things come from Portsmouth University and i’d advise grabbing one for the bargain price of £39.

Head over to Jodie’s website and invest in your town. jodie-silsby.com

Jodie was in my year at Uni, and this piece of work is amazing.
Such a hard worker and perfectionist.

First words I saw were written wrong.
“Kushti” in place of cushty . A Romany word like so many other words used in Pompey. Over front doors in Paulsgrove “Kushti Bok” (good luck).
Going dain the pub…….”Gun deyn the pub mush”.
All I can say is that whoever put this together didn’t frequent the Cosham area at all where these words and phrases have been used for years.
Nice idea though and I’d like to see how many other places have been written incorrectly?

Bought this as a gift for someone and I have to say, excellent quality and a fantastic wall piece!
@Steve Burn I think the spellings and phrases are correct. Cosham isn’t in Portsmouth anyway.
