Last week we mentioned the illustrations of local designer James Weaver and showed a couple of his awesome grey tone drawings of Portsmouth landmarks. James got in contact to let us know that prints would soon be available. Well wait no longer. James has put his new blog up on line and prints are available in A4 and A3. Head over to deepsouth-illustration.com and check them out. Seriously nice work.
“I’ve lived in the city of Portsmouth my whole life. Much of this naval city was destroyed by bombing in world war II. Few of its edwardian and art deco buildings remained, and its victorian slums were wiped out. Many concrete monoliths and brutalist architecture were built in their place in the 60’s. You take this mish-mash of buildings that represent the city’s history for granted as you pass by them every day.
Over the last few years I’ve watched many of these building’s become abandoned, demolished, or derelict, left to rot by a council who deem them unimportant. As these buildings pass, so does Portsmouth’s heritage. My aim is to document as many of these constructions as I can before they’re wiped from our memories.
The locations are photographed myself, before creating a hand-drawing from the resulting photograph. Once completed, I scan into the computer to add layers of toning.”

Think I’ll be picking up an A4 print on pay day. Wondering what locations will be next to get the same treatment?

Cool, they are really cool images… Gonna keep an eye on the future ones for sure! I like the idea of documenting it all. Ive taken so many random photos of streets in Portsmouth to capture everything in that moment before it all changes for better or worse.
