PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA'S No.1 for ARTS, CULTURE & LIFESTYLE

Pompey Pop

We’ve featured the Pompey Pop Pix Flickr on a few occasions with it’s huge archive of photos of Portsmouth bands, singers, musicians, venues, posters and tickets from the 40s to the late 60s plus many of the visiting artists that performed here back then too. Dave Allen and Mick Cooper are the brains and hard work behind this incredible archive and they have just launched a Pompey Pop website which takes all of those images and catalogues them in to albums and also in to years. At some point they hope a local museum or similar institution will take on the collection for future exhibition and permanent display. Plus, there is talk of a book. Can’t wait on both counts.

Interestingly I read this the other day “Outside of London, Portsmouth scored highest in terms of density, with one in every 558 people aged 16 to 74 being a professional musician”. What with some strong music blogs, many up and coming acts and artists and some great venues this city’s strong history with popular music will continue this legacy.

The Pompey Pop blog contains many of the stories behind the photos too and is well worth a look through.
