Results from the Strong Island Home Brew Competition 2016

Well, what a fantastic turn out for the sixth annual Strong Island Home Brew competition! We had a record amount of entries again this year with the judges having to navigate their way through no less than 31 different brews. Lets dive straight in to the results for the evening:

Local cider stalwarts Milton Pride and David Eves went head to head again with David taking this year’s spoils in the cider category with his entry Summer Cider.

We opened up the judging a bit this year with an aim to attract some more ‘weird and wonderful’ entries, something we will be developing further for next year too. This saw the unrestricted brewing trophy claimed by first-time entrant Dan Foster with his Vienna Wheat, an excellent wheat beer entry. Pig & Pirate’s Thai Wheat Beer claimed second place and third place went to another first timer Mark Bryant with his As Seen On TV.

Then on to the big prize that will be hitting pumps in your local around May time courtesy of a seasonal special brew by Irving & Co. brewers. Third place went to last year’s winner Jonathon Goulding with his brew Headmark. Second place was taken by another first time entrant John Stainton-Ellis with Bamboozel. Huge congratulations go to Patrick Peers with the winning brew Beerly Deloved. Patrick has been an entrant in nearly every year’s competition so well done to him for finally scooping the big prize.

Many thanks go to Meat & Barrel for hosting the event again and to the judges Malcolm Irving from Irving & Co brewers, Stuart Ainsworth from the Leopold Tavern and Alan Thompson from Get Brewing.

Here’s to an even stronger competition in 2017! Below are some photos, there are loads more over at our Facebook page too.
