EXPLORING THIS LOCAL RIVERSIDE HOME TO SAILING WITH OUR CAMERAS

A bit behind on photo walkshop write ups, sorry! Next up is the walkshop down at Hamble River at the start of June. This was the first time we had had a walkshop here, despite many trips with a camera to this beautiful village on the river. Hamble is an old village but it is also a local capital for sailing, with many marinas and the river packed with yachts travelling in and out to the Solent.

We started off at the bottom of the hill from the village centre, down at the rising tide. We looked at narrative within a scene, trying different angles of three benches facing the river. From here we looked at natural framing on the main quay and also leading the eye with the pontoon that leads down to the distinctive pink river ferries to Warsash.

…testing different shutter speeds…with thrown stones in to the river water to catch the water from blur through to frozen droplets

This group (apart from one photographer) had all been on one or more photo walkshops before so we explored more technical elements of exposure, including push/pull, plus advanced composition working with the use of space and directional flow within an image. From the quay we made it down to the shoreline and worked on different angles and also spent time testing different shutter speeds…with thrown stones in to the river water to catch the water from blur through to frozen droplets. As always the two hours flew by, a big thank you to everyone who came along.

There are still some spaces available for tomorrow’s photography walkshop at Portchester Castle, you can find out more details and book online at:
