Friends of the Earth Urban Hike Along The Old Canal Route

Portsmouth Friends of the Earth are holding an urban hike on the 9th July that follows the route of the old Portsmouth Canal. The hike runs at a total distance of 2.7 miles and all welcome. To get involved meet up at 10.45 am for 11 am start at Commercial Road fountain, near site of old Canal Basin, to walk east to Milton Locks, where the canal joined Langstone Harbour. The barges would have then travelled around to Langstone and then on to Chichester Harbour, before joining the Chichester Canal entrance, now located next to Chichester Marina.

On the walk you will be accompanied by Fiona Rogoff, University of Portsmouth Masters in Architecture student, who will share creative ideas along the way of how local artists, gardeners, community groups, businesses and, of course, the Council might enhance the route. Ideas include street art, a community cafe, community garden, pop-up market-place, tree houses and trees, a statue of Conan Doyle, even a lido (!). This is a leisurely walk with no gradients and it is worth thinking about bringing a picnic too.

To find out all the details check the Facebook event.
