Exhibition: ‘A Self Portrait’ by Sam Hiscock

I see the beauty behind the mystery and the often-mundane purpose of shelf fillers and dust collectors, and I am constantly striving to visually document this”.

Aspex Guildhall presents ‘A Self Portrait’, a solo exhibition of works from Sam Hiscock. The illustrator’s work details the curious and familiar objects displayed in the artist’s family home.

The artist believes that every object or collection possesses a fascinating tale. His eclectic interests are often used as a means of inspiration, from old promotional advertisement and packaging tins to antiques and larger British moths.

Hiscock describes: “Over the last few years the subject of my illustrations has reflected my interest in objects and their stories. What makes someone buy a pair of ceramic cats? Who made them? Are they supposed to be so ugly? I see the beauty behind the mystery and the often-mundane purpose of shelf fillers and dust collectors, and I am constantly striving to visually document this”.

The artist graduated from Southampton Solent University in July 2016.

‘A Self Portrait’ runs from 12 December 2016 – 10 March 2017, and can be found in the Ground Floor café of Portsmouth Guildhall.

Aspex Guildhall is also located in the basement, the First Floor Freda Swain Lounge and the café of Portsmouth Guildhall. Please visit the website of Portsmouth Guildhall for opening times: www.portsmouthguildhall.org.uk
