PORTSMOUTH & SOUTHSEA'S No.1 for ARTS, CULTURE & LIFESTYLE

Review: Melt Dunes ‘Flesh’

So, I’m due to head down to Portsmouth Psych Festival on 29th April and one of the acts, Melt Dunes, released a single only yesterday. Spying that they belong to Strong Island Recordings, I thought I should take the opportunity to give it a listen. Flesh is a thrilling, rolling psychedelic joy and it’s got me thoroughly excited about seeing Melt Dunes live.

Accurately described as a “hulking monster of a track”, it’s generous, “a near 6-minute krautrock workout played with the gusto of The Stooges and the subtleties of CAN”. It pulses with an eerie, haunting nature of a horror soundtrack that chases the listener into a corner, surrounding them with dangerous whispers of acts yet to be committed. Fragmented solos break into building sound and fall back into bare bones before pushing forward again, unpredictable, volatile, with purpose.

Even after a couple of listens, Flesh has me hooked and I’m excited, as it’s the first of “many great numbers the band are set to release”. There are a lot of dates coming up too, so get your diary out:

23rd February: Epson SU, Epsom
24th February: The Alex, Southampton
3rd March: The Festing, Portsmouth
4th March: The Crofters Rights, Bristol
29th April: Portsmouth Psych Fest

Excellent work, Melt Dunes. Can’t wait to see you in action. And yes Strong Island Recordings, you’re onto a winner there.
