New Walkshops and the 100th Walkshop Celebration!

POUR PHOTOWALKS ARE BACK PLUS A FREE CELEBRATION EVENT FOR No. 100

Sorry it has been a bit quiet for a while, after taking Saturdays off for a month or two off over the summer sadly work commitments ended up taking over the usual Saturday morning photography walkshop spot in the diary. Happy to say that there are now new walkshop dates through to February 2019, including a special 100th walkshop back at the original location of the first walkshop way back in 2015: Old Portsmouth. This 100th walkshop will be a free, fun get-together and wonder around the same route as before. You can find out more HERE.

The times have changed slightly, in particular morning walkshops now start at 11am and run until 1pm. This is partly due to feedback but also for selfish reasons, I now take my son out for walks every Saturday early morning! Apologies if this new time doesn’t suit everyone. Let me know your thoughts. The cost for 2 hours is still £10.

Free 100th Photography Walkshop

Hard to believe, but the photo walkshop on the 9th February will be the 100th! To celebrate this free walk will be more of a fun get together and less workshop. If you’re one of the 100s of photographers who have come on the 99 previous walkshops please come along, if you are new to photo walkshops, come along too…the best celebration of reaching 100 is just getting photographers together for a walk with their cameras.

For the location and route, we’re retracing the steps of the first photo walkshop back in 2015: Old Portsmouth. We’ll be starting off at the Round Tower and then exploring the old battery stations and the top of the Round Tower before making our way down to the Camber and then on to The Point with views over Portsmouth Harbour. We’ll then make our way back through Old Portsmouth and if there is time down to Sally Port and on to the Hotwalls beach.

New Location: Royal Victoria Country Park

Worth mentioning that the 101st photo walkshop will be at a new location, Royal Victoria Country Park near Southampton. If you haven’t been before it is a beautiful spot with a mix of shoreline and woodland as well as the landmark chapel now re-opened to the public.

Please get in touch if you have any questions, ideas for new locations for 2019, etc. on paul@strongisland.co. Hope to see you out there with your cameras later this month! – Paul.

New photo walkshops are shown below and are HERE.

Portchester Castle

15th December 2018
Portchester Castle
11am to 1pm – £10

We’ll be starting off in the castle carpark and walking down to the main gate and then around the exterior of the castle wall perimeter. We’ll look at ways of capturing the different areas of the castle, the textures and the historical elements on the walls, etc. We’ll go down to the harbour-side gate and take photos using the old spiral staircase before going out to the harbour edge. From here we’ll be walking around the outer walls with stunning views out over Portsmouth Harbour. We’ll finish off exploring the woodland to the south of the castle (if there is time).

Expect to see loads of fantastic historical elements from towers to stairs to walls & gates and also views south over Portsmouth Harbour, yachts travelling to & from Port Solent and the green woodland between the shoreline and castle grounds.

South Parade Pier

5th January 2019
Southsea Seafront in B&W
11am to 1pm – £10

For this Southsea walkshop we will be focusing on shooting in monochrome and what makes it different from colour photography. The strong spring sunlight (hopefully!) and the shadows it creates came be perfect for black and white images. We’ll begin setting our cameras up in monochrome and start exploring the Rose Gardens and the remains of the old fort. We will then visit the beach before walking down to Canoe Lake. We will then head back down to the shelters on the Prom and back on the beach before ending up at South Parade Pier. Expect to see a great mix of subjects, textures, shadows and tones.

Unlike other walks, we’re not worried about lots of wind and rain for this one…if anything they can help create some dramatic and atmospheric images for this walk. So this walkshop will go ahead no matter the weather conditions. Most cameras are not weather sealed or waterproof so it is worth considering buying an in-expensive rain cover for your camera in advance. There are lots on Amazon for all camera types and are pretty cheap and always handy to have around in your camera bag just in case.

Emsworth

12th January 2019
Emsworth Mill Pond & Shoreline
11am to 1pm – £10

We’ll be starting off the photography walkshop in historic Emsworth on the famous South Street that runs down past old fishing cottages to the shore of Chichester Harbour. We’ll explore the outer edge of the Mill Pond, looking over the wide views over the water and looking for interesting landmarks and sights. At Emsworth Sailing Club we’ll go out on to the shoreline before making our way back around the other side of the pond, exploring the boat yards, etc. along the way.

Expect to see a busy small town, lots of boats and yachts, great landscape views, beach finds on the shoreline, textures on the boats in the yards and much more.

Southsea at Night

12th January 2019
Night Photography on Southsea Seafront
7pm to 9pm – £10

For this walkshop we’ll be creating some long exposure photography at night on Southsea Seafront, including exploring around Canoe Lake, along the beach, on the promenade and down to the pier, plus experimenting with light painting along the way.

We’ll be going out in the evening so please bring warm and dry clothing. A tripod for your camera is also required and a remote trigger would also be handy, if not then please familiarise yourself with your timer shutter release on your camera. Due to the low light this workshop is probably not so good for cameraphones.

Eastney

26th January 2019
Eastney Harbour Entrance
11am to 1pm – £10

Explore the entrance to Langstone Harbour from The Solent, from the Hayling Ferry departure pontoon and the many old boats on the shoreline, down to the open beaches and the concrete structures. Expect to see a busy harbour with many different types of boats, wonderful textures of old houseboats and shingle beach plus the concrete pier and wide open views of the Solent.

Old Portsmouth

9th February 2019
100th Photography Walkshop – Old Portsmouth
11am to 1pm – £10

Hard to believe, but this photo walkshop will be the 100th! To celebrate this free walk will be more of a fun get together and less walkshop. If you’re one of the 100s of photographers who have come on the 99 previous walkshops please come along, if you are new to photo walkshops, come along too…the best celebration of reaching 100 is just getting photographers together for a walk with their cameras.

We’ll then make our way back through Old Portsmouth and if there is time down to Sally Port and on to the Hotwalls beach.

Expect to photograph great views of The Solent and Portsmouth Harbour with lots of yachts and ships, the historic Round Tower and Hotwalls, the fishing boats and craft in The Camber, view of Spinnaker Tower, historic buildings and pathways and then the beach and pier.

Royal Victoria country Park

23rd February 2019
Royal Victoria Country Park
11am to 1pm – £10

A new location for photo walkshops (but one I’ve taught photography at for a few years with a local college) is Royal Victoria Country Park near Southampton. This historic location has a really varied mix of subjects which we’ll cover over the two hours. Expect to see the newly restored landmark chapel, find the minature railway, explore the beach overlooking the busy Southampton Water and the Hythe Power Station and discover the woodland of the park itself.
